Teatro alla Scala, opera and ballet season 2007/2008

La Scala theater is the most famous opera theater in Italy and one of the country´s most important cultural institutions. Extensive renovations, concluded at the end of 2004, added advanced technological systems and a new auditorium to La Scala.

The 2007/2008 Program, in addition to the inevitable opera program, is enhanced by symphonies, chamber music and, naturally, the grand La Scala Ballet company starring danseurs Roberto Bolle and Massimo Murru.

The show tells the story of Italian sculpture through the works of one of its greatest sculptors, purchased by the Czars, particularly Nicholas I.

The exhibition was handled by Sergej Androsov, the director of the European Art department at the Hermitage and by Fernando Mazzocca, an art critic. Among the works of Canova exhibited are 'Le Tre Grazie', 'la Danzatrice', 'l´Amorino alato', 'la Maddalena penitente' and several works previously not exhibited in Italy like 'le Ore Danzanti' by Finelli, 'la Flora e la Psiche svenuta' by Tenerani, 'l´Amore che abbevera le colombe' by Bienaimé, 'la Ninfa dello scorpione' and 'La Fiducia in Dio' by Bartolini and 'il Bacchino malato' by Dupré, which can be compared with 'il Bacchino' (better known as 'l´Ammostatore') by Bartolini.

At the same time as the show, you can see the catalogue of Federico Motta Editore with photographs by Aurelio Amendola, edited by the show´s curators.

The Milan Aquarium is one of the oldest in the world (1906).
The attractive building with its rich exterior façades decorated with antiquities is situated in the Parco Sempione near the Castello Sforzesco and the Arena.
Exotic exhibits can be found in the large tank dedicated to the nearest tropical sea, the Red Sea, as a possible future evolution of the Mediterranean. Currently on show are 36 tanks with around 100 species of aquatic life forms.
Its library contains material on marine science, and is one of the richest specialised collections in Lombardy, not to mention Italy. Visits follow a variety of itineraries and are designed for children and adults of all ages. The Istituto per gli Studi sul Mare (Institute for Marine Studies) offers theoretical and practical courses on marine biology.

The international biennial show for wood technologies and supplies for the furniture industry has, from this year, become the XYLEXPO NEW to signal the union of product technologies. For 60 days, this great village will move to the beat of the Festival LatinoAmericando. It invites visitors to explore Latin American culture, a perfect fusion of music, art, literature, crafts, folklore, foods, trade, tourism and solidarity.

Music is the protagonist and an important calendar of live concerts includes the most representational voices and groups of Latin American music.

In the Salsodromo expert DJ´s, animators and dance schools will offer a lively program every night to the beat of salsa, bachata, merengue, cha cha cha and reggaeton.

The Festival will also offer a series of special events: the Latin DJ All Stars; the election of Miss and Mr. Festival; El Gran Carnaval and the Bailando! Latin Dance Show, with the participation of more than 300 dancers from Latin American dance schools and groups from all over the world.

In addition, there will be exhibits, book stands and an equo solidarity pavilion besides six typical Latin American restaurants, snacks and tropical bars in a lively scenario of music and entertainment focusing on the country represented.

The exhibition represents a summary of the works of one of the best contemporary artists able to describe modern man through strong images and, at the same time, expressivity, that originates from a personal and intimate understanding of being.

Bacon underlines expression and authenticity, sometimes, to the detriment of realism; overall, the show highlights about thirty of its works from the beginning to the end of his life. Particular attention is paid to the paintings from WWII with 'Head', which made Bacon famous, renewing the traditional Western figurative by representing the violence and agony of man. Among the masters that Bacon used as inspiration were Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Cézanne and Velàzquez, whose 'Portrait of Pope Innocent X' he considered to be a masterpiece, showing the metaphor of the human condition. From the 70s, the period of the artist´s maturity, we can admire his triptychs, works in which society is described in a provocatory and disconcerting manner.
